Chief’s Corner
By Chief Steven J. Wojnar Dudley Police Department College graduations are upon us and all schools will be closing out what has been a crazy year soon. When this is combined with the warmer weather, and the easing of many COVID restrictions, people have the urge to drive around or enjoy other forms of outdoor recreation. I was asked to provide reminders to drivers, especially the younger drivers, of the importance of driving safely. Unfortunately, we have experienced too many tragic accidents and injures involving young, inexperienced drivers. We continue to work with the schools and other community groups to promote driving safety. Experience is perhaps the most important factor in preventing accidents. Unfortunately for new drivers, the lack of experience can only be corrected by driving. There are many driving behaviors which can be major factors in crashes. Three of the most common are speed, distractions, and seatbelts. By controlling the speed of a vehicle and adjusting it according to the conditions around you, you have the best chance to prevent an accident. The speed of a vehicle directly relates to the distance needed to stop. It takes time for your mind to identify the problem and react to it. The faster you travel, the less time you leave for these decisions. Distractions in and around your vehicle greatly enhance your risk of an accident. These can be cell phones, people in your vehicle, animals in your car, and a variety of other possibilities. Anything which can draw away your attention from the task of driving must be limited to keep your focus on the road. Finally, seatbelt use is a proven life saver. Vehicles are manufactured to protect the passenger compartment. When you are contained and held in your seat, you have the best chance of surviving a crash. Most injuries and deaths occur when a person is ejected from a vehicle or when he or she collides with the steering wheel or other parts of a car. |
Some simple measures can be taken to limit serious injuries and deaths. Educational information, such as computer driving programs and personal presentations, are available to those who may need this. Please contact me if you need further information.
As the pandemic continues, we ask everyone to stay safe and continue to take the necessary precautions to protect yourselves. Vaccination information can be found at www.dudleyma.gov or by calling 508-949-8036. Hopefully, the end of this pandemic is in sight. We, at the Dudley Police Department, greatly appreciate the support we receive from our community. Thanks again for your questions and comments.
