Many laws considered as "older" are often the subjects of questions.  I was asked a while ago about spotlights on vehicles.  Are they still allowed on vehicles and if so, under what conditions can they be used?
Spotlights can be used on vehicles.  Most police cruisers are equipped with them.  They were used more often many years ago when the vehicle lighting was considered inadequate.  Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90 Section 16 regulates the use of these devices.  The rays of these lights can be no more than two feet above the road at a distance of thirty feet from the vehicle.  Exceptions can be made in some cases, such as for the reading of signs.  These are also allowed in emergency situations when other required lights are not operational.  A violation of this law carries a $100 civil fine.
Spotlights can serve a legitimate purpose when it comes to operating a vehicle, especially under emergency conditions.  They assist police in locating house numbers at night and illuminating other areas where criminal activity could take place.  These can also be dangerous if used improperly, as the bright lights can hamper the vision of other operators.  If you find it necessary to use these devices for whatever reason, please remember to operate them safely.

I wish to thank Selectman Brian Germain, Administrative Assistant Ms. Michelle Roy, Maintenance Coordinator Dennis Tremblay, and the many others for renewing the Town’s annual tree lighting on Thursday December 14th.  Members of the local Cub and Boy Scouts were also on hand to assist.  Numerous local businesses and citizens donated refreshments and other items.  Santa was delivered via fire truck and the children really enjoyed the evening.  I thank everyone again for their hard work and dedication in bringing back this Town tradition.

I also had the pleasure of serving as the zoo keeper for the Mason Road Schools first grade holiday show on Friday, December 15th.  I had a tough act to follow in Superintendent Gilrein, who performed the same part the previous Wednesday.  All the children worked hard and the show was great.  I thank Principal Dono and her teachers and staff for another wonderful event.

On behalf of everyone at the Dudley Police Department, I wish you and yours a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season and best wishes for the New Year.
