Chief’s Corner

This past week, I received a request to provide some advice for our senior citizens.  Many seniors are very trusting of individuals who may visit their home.  Quite often, criminals prey on the elderly due to their vulnerability and lack of concern for security.  I was asked to provide some safety tips for our senior citizens to assist in protecting them and their property.
Most older residents grew up in times when people were more trusting.  Quite frequently, I hear the discussion of how doors to homes were never locked in the "old days."  Unfortunately, times have changed and we must adjust with them.  Keep your doors locked at all times.  Even if you are in the home or in the back yard, a locked door provides added security and will be an obstruction for a would be intruder.  Install as many lights as possible around the outside of your home, especially around doors and areas which can be hidden from view.  It is also advisable to have the ability to view people who are at your door, without opening it.  A side window or "peep hole" in the door will allow you to see who is at your home.
When a person comes to your door unexpectedly, do not open the door to speak with the person.  Speak through the door and ask questions to confirm their business.  Criminals may pose as inspectors or repairmen in order to gain access.  If you are unsure or uneasy about a persons' presence at your home, contact a neighbor, family member, or even the police if you feel it should be necessary for your safety.
Senior citizens are looked upon as easy target, due to their trusting nature, a perceived weaker physical condition, and the possible presence or money, antiques, or other valuables.  Do not allow yourself to be a victim.  Take measures to protect yourself and approach individuals with a sense of caution.  It may be the best decision you could ever make.

Thanks again to the residents of Joshua Place for their hospitality during my recent visit on Thursday, September 7th.  A large crowd was present to enjoy coffee, snacks, and good conversation.  I thank everyone once again for another enjoyable time.

I wish to once again thank the Faculty, Staff, and Students of Shepherd Hill Regional High School for honoring the memories of those lost five years ago in the September 11th terrorist attacks.  A brief and fitting ceremony was held at Carmignani Field on Monday, September 11th.  This involved members of the police and fire departments as well as representatives from the armed forces.  We appreciate the continuing efforts to remember those who lost their lives on this fateful day.  We must never forget.

Thanks again for your questions and comments.  Please send them to me at the Dudley Police Department 71 West Main St. Dudley, Ma. 01571 or email at swojnar@dudleypolice.com
