Chief’s Corner
By
Chief Steven J. Wojnar
Dudley Police Department
The question of radar
detectors was brought up to me recently. These are devices used in
vehicles which detect the transmissions from a radar unit. These are
most often used by police to check the speed of vehicles. The question
was have there been any changes in the law making these devices illegal
in Massachusetts?
Radar detectors are still legal in Massachusetts. There are
several states where their use is prohibited. This is important to
remember should you be traveling out of state. These detectors are not
fool proof and may work only when the "radar gun" is activated. The
radar guns can be left on or may be operated on demand. In the case of
the latter, the radar detector may sound only briefly and quite possible
too late.
These devices also cannot be in any area which impedes the
clear vision of the vehicle driver. The rules for these units are the
same as they are for dash ornaments, fuzzy dice, large air fresheners,
windshield suction paper pads, etc. It could be impeded operation under
MGL Chapter 90 Section 13 and a violation can carry a $35 civil fine.
The most important thing to remember in this is to watch
your speed. If you have a need to use a radar detector, do not treat it
as an open invitation to violate the law. Take your time and exercise
caution while driving to prevent accidents and injuries.
I wish to congratulate Mr. Charles Puliafico, his family,
and the many other employees of WEBCO Chemical who recently celebrated
the company's 50th anniversary. I was invited along with many others
from the area to an open house to celebrate this milestone. I thank
them for the invitation and for what the company does for our
community. Once again, congratulations and here’s to another 50 years.
Thanks again for your questions and comments. Please send them to me at
