Chief’s corner
By
Chief Steven J. Wojnar

Pedestrians' walking the roads was the
topic of a recent question I received. This is of particular concern in
areas where there are no sidewalks. I was asked to provide people with
safety tips for walking on the road at night.
Unfortunately, there are no requirements regarding extra
precautions for walking on the road at night. People should still
observe the pedestrian rules for walking by staying on the shoulder,
facing toward the traffic, etc. Some precautions people may observe can
be the same as those for Halloween safety. For example, people should
wear bright or reflective clothing. Flashlights should be used to light
your way and to warn vehicles about your location. If walking in
groups, walk single file and avoid darting out in traffic. When
crossing the road, avoid walking out from between vehicles. Cross at
intersections, well-lit areas, or other locations where you have a clear
view of traffic, and traffic has a clear view of you.
People and vehicles must share the road. It can be
difficult for vehicles to make evasive moves quickly. While walking,
you will see the vehicle most often before the driver sees you. Take
the extra precaution to be safe and never assume the driver sees you.
Being cautious can prevent accidents and injuries.
I wish to congratulate the Town of Dudley on the occasion of
its 275th birthday. Historical Commission Chairman Ed Bazinet and his
committee organized a very nice observance of the Town's anniversary on
Saturday, February 3rd. This was the official date of the Towns
incorporation on February 3, 1732. Many people attending this event in
the Municipal Complex enjoyed the stories and the snacks that followed.
I thank all involved who organized this event and we look forward to the
many other celebrations in the upcoming months.
