Chief’s Corner

Questions for this column often come from a person's frustrations.  I was asked recently about vehicles leaving their lane to avoid an obstruction.  The example given to me involved a tree branch falling into the road.  Does the vehicle, whose lane the branch is in, have the obligation to yield to the traffic in the opposite direction?
The vehicle in whose lane the obstruction is has the obligation to yield to other traffic prior to maneuvering around the object.  Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 89 section 1 through 4B contains several definitions obligating vehicles to keep right and operate within a single lane.  Vehicles can drive around obstructions if it is safe to do so.  Any movement around objects is similar to passing other vehicles.  The obligation to yield to other travelers is present in the vehicle making the move.  Violations can include civil fines of at least $100.
Any time vehicles are moving contrary to the allowed purpose, accidents can occur.  Whenever you make a movement into another lane, always be certain it is safe to do so.  Allow other vehicles to pass by if necessary.  The few moments of waiting can mean the difference between an accident and/or arriving at your destination safely.

I once again thank the residents of Joshua Place for their hospitality during my visit on Thursday December 7th.  This is always a fun time for me and I think the residents enjoy this also.  Thanks once again all the residents and I wish them all a Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year.

Recognition also goes out the Dudley Lions and Leo’s Clubs for another enjoyable holiday breakfast held on December 9th at Shepherd Hill High School.  Santa was present and many of the member “helpers” did a fine job with the food and entertainment.  The event appeared to be a success and a good time was had by all.  I thank both of these organizations for all they do for the people of this community.

Thanks again for your questions and comments.  Please send them to me at the Dudley Police Department 71 West Main St. Dudley, Ma. 01571 or email at swojnar@dudleypolice.com
