Press Release

December 10, 2009

On Thursday, December 10th at approximately 1am, Dudley Police officers, Sgt. Paul Ceppetelli and Officer Marek Karlowicz, were on patrol in the area of Dresser Hill Road.   They were actively looking for a vehicle which was reported to have been involved in vandalism in two surrounding towns.  Both Charlton and Oxford had incidents of mailboxes damaged throughout the course of the evening.  A car, described as a small foreign late model sedan with a loud exhaust, was identified as a possible suspect vehicle involved in the incidents in Charlton and Oxford.

While traveling west on Dudley Southbridge Road near the intersection of Dresser Hill Road, Sgt. Ceppetelli saw a vehicle matching the description provided earlier.  The vehicle, later identified as a 1998 Toyota Corolla, was traveling east on Dudley Southbridge Road.  Sgt. Ceppetelli heard what he believed was the sound of a mailbox being damaged at that time.  He was unable to stop the vehicle at that location and he radioed for assistance.  Officer Karlowicz was able to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Dudley Southbridge Road and Center Road.

Three male subjects were found in the vehicle.  After investigation, these people were identified as suspects in the mailbox damages in all three Towns.  It was later discovered that a baseball bat was used to cause damage to the various boxes.  All three were subsequently arrested.  They are identified as Shawn Figueroa age 21 of 16 Slater Street in Webster, Matthew Bergeron age 21 of 6 Windy Ridge Road in Webster, and Zachary Mailloux age 20 of 8 East Kendall Street in Worcester.  All three were brought to the Dudley Police Department for booking and were arraigned at Dudley District court today on vandalism charges.  Chief Steven Wojnar credits Sgt. Ceppetelli and Officer Karlowicz for their efforts and actions in this case, the hard work of the surrounding law enforcement agencies, and the actions of the citizens who took the time to report this incident to police.  The cooperative efforts resulted in the identity and speedy apprehension of the suspects.

It is believed over 40 mailboxes were damaged between the three owns.  Damage in Dudley was reported in the Dudley Southbridge Road area.  In Charlton, the majority of damage occurred in the Dresser Hill and Oxford Road areas.  In Oxford, damage was reported in the area of Larned Road.

The police are encouraging people to report any information which could be of assistance in this investigation, including if your property may have been damaged.  Please contact Sgt. Ceppetelli at the Dudley Police Department 508-943-4411, Officer Richard McGrath in Charlton 508-248-2259, or Officer Jeremy Grniet in Oxford at 508-987-6021.
