I was recently asked a question about "dangerous weapons." Many items
people choose to carry or possess can be considered or defined as
dangerous weapons according to the law. I was asked about the leather
wrist bands with metal studs. Are these legal to possess?
Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 269 Section 10 is the
statute for dangerous weapons. The weapons can be specifically classified
in two ways. The first is by definition in the law. The second is by
their use. For example a tire iron is legal and has a lawful purpose.
Should it be used during an assault situation, it has now become a
dangerous weapon. The wrist bands in question here are illegal as defined
in Chapter 269. According to section 10, "any arm band made with leather
which has metallic spikes, points or studs or any similar device made from
any other substance" is considered a dangerous weapon. These are illegal
to possess.
Penalty for a violation of this law is a felony, whether or not the weapon
is actually used. Punishment can include a Prison term for up to five
years. These weapons are able to inflict serious injury or death. This
is the reason mere possession is considered serious.
I wish to thank the Dudley PTO and the teachers, faculty, and
staff of the Dudley Charlton Schools for another successful fundraising
event. The "Harlem Wizards" came to Shepherd Hill High School on
Wednesday, April 12th and took on a gathering of locals, including me.
The night was very entertaining for the sell out crowd. Everyone involved
deserves a great deal of credit for their hard work, dedication, and
support of these programs designed to benefit our young people.
I also thank everyone who came out to the Town meeting on
Tuesday, April 11th. Many people took time from their busy schedules to
provide a quorum. Your participation in the meeting process is greatly
appreciated.
Once again, the
Dudley Police Department, along with many other state and local agencies
throughout the Commonwealth, will be participating in the “Click It or
Ticket” and “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose” campaign sponsored through a
grant from the Governors Highway Safety Bureau. We are currently engaged
in the “Road Respect” program and there will be designated patrols on the
roadways focusing on erratic or aggressive operators. Please be aware of
these additional officers out on patrol and remember to buckle up and
drive defensively.
Thanks again for your questions and comments. Please send them to me at
the Dudley Police Department 71 West Main St., Dudley, Ma. 01571 or email
at
