On Monday, August 14th, the Dudley police responded to a cell phone report of a backhoe being operated erratically on Route 31. Police attempted numerous times to stop the backhoe. The operator of the backhoe, Michael Menzone of 18 Ziemba Road in Dudley, refused to stop. Mr. Menzone steered his backhoe around police vehicles blocking the road and ignored cruiser blue lights and sirens for approximately three miles. Several motorists on Route 31 had to pull off the road to avoid a collision with the backhoe.
Mr. Menzone drove the backhoe to Ziemba road with police following. After an altercation with police Mr. Menzone was taken into custody. Mr. Menzone was arraigned on Tuesday at Dudley District court for the following:
Disorderly conduct Resisting arrest Assault with a dangerous weapon (backhoe) Failure to stop for the police Failure to keep right for oncoming vehicles Reckless operation of a motor vehicle Operating under the influence of alcohol, 4th offense Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license Wanton destruction of property
Sergeant Bruce Spiewakowski and Officer Gregory Daniels investigated.
