Press Release
On Sunday, April 22, 2007, at approximately 12:45 am, Dudley Police encountered a 2000 Jeep Cherokee illegally parked in the travel lane on Rt 197 West Main St. Officers approached the vehicle to find a 37 year old Louisiana woman distraught, crying, and very upset. She explained to the officers that she was driving for hours and was lost.
Officers suspected her to be under the influence of an illegal substance. When asked if she was under influence she stated yes, and she handed one of the officers a small plastic bag of what was believed to be cocaine. Officers inquired if there were any more drugs in the vehicle, the woman handed officers a balled up rag which was duct taped. The rag contained a large zip lock bag which contained 55 individual smaller bags, all filled with cocaine. The drug packaging was consistent with that of drug distribution. Police seized approximately 50 grams of cocaine.
The woman was placed under arrest for trafficking cocaine and operating under the influence of drugs. She was identified as Eliz E. Garcia, age 37, of Kenner LA. A 12 month old child was also in the vehicle at the time of the arrest. The Department of Social Service took custody of the child.
Police forfeiture proceedings are under way for the 2000 Jeep Cherokee as well as $1300 dollars in cash. Ms. Garcia was released on $1,000 cash bail and was scheduled to be arraigned in Dudley District Court on Monday, April 23, 2007.
